Brother Lazer Printer Continues to Say That There is No Paper

"No Paper" will appear on your machine's display if the machine is out of paper, the paper isn't loaded correctly in the paper tray, or the paper source isn't correctly selected in the printer driver or application. Follow the steps listed below to clear this error message:

1. Try printing a document from the manual feed slot:

a. Lift the support flap to prevent paper from sliding off the face down output tray.

b. Open the manual feed slot cover.

c. Use both hands to slide the manual feed slot paper guides to fit the width of the paper you're using.

d. Using both hands, put one full sheet of paper in the manual feed slot until the front edge touches the paper feed roller. When you feel the machine pull it in, let go.

e. Send a print job to the machine.

- If the document prints, go to step 2.

- If the document doesn't print and the machine's display continues to show "No Paper", go to step 4.

2. Change the Tray Setting on the machine:

a. Press ▲ or ▼ to display General Setup, then press OK.

b. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Tray Setting, then press OK.

c. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Manual Feed, then press OK.

d. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Off, then press Go.

3. Print a document from your computer.

- If the document prints and "No Paper" no longer appears on your machine's display, the issue has been resolved.

- If the problem continues, go to step 4.

4. Make sure the paper you're using meets Brother's recommended paper specifications for the paper tray. For more information, refer to: Recommended paper

5. Verify the Paper Type and Paper Size settings on your machine:

a. Press ▲ or ▼ to display General Setup, then press OK.

b. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Tray Setting, then press OK.

c. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Paper Type, then press OK.

d. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Plain Paper, Thick Paper, Recycled Paper, or Thin Paper, then press OK for the option installed in your paper tray. The machine's display will briefly show "Accepted".

e. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Paper Size, then press OK.

f. Press ▲ or ▼ to display A4, Letter, A5, A5 (Long Edge), A6, Executive, Legal, Mexico Legal, India Legal, or Folio, then pressGo for the option installed in your paper tray.

6. Print the Printer Settings report:

a. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Print Reports, then press OK.

b. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Printer Settings, then press OK.

c. Press Go. The machine will print the Printer Settings report.

- If the report is unable to print because of the "No Paper" error, go to step 9.

- If the report prints without any errors, do one of the following:

- Windows users, go to step 7.

- Macintosh users, go to step 8.

7. Verify that Auto Detect is selected in the Printer properties:

a. Open the Printers folder. For instructions, click here.

b. Right-click on the printer driver, then left-click on Printer properties.

c. Click on the Device Settings tab.

d. Click Auto Detect .

e. Click Apply, then OK.

- Go to step 8.

8. Verify the paper source is correctly selected in the printer driver:

Windows

a. Open the Printers folder. For instructions, click here.

b. Right-click on the printer driver, then left-click on Printing Preferences.

c. Make sure that the "Paper Source" is set correctly for the First Page and Other Pages.

d. Press OK.

e. Print the document.

Macintosh

a. From the application, click File → Print.

b. Select the Brother printer driver from the Printer List.

c. Select Print Settings from the Application Dropdown.

d. Make sure that the "Paper Source" is set correctly.

e. Click Print.

- If the document prints without any errors, the issue has been resolved.

- If the problem continues, go to step 9.

9. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

10. Remove all paper from the paper tray.

11. Press and slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you're using. Press the green release levers to slide the paper guides.

note icon For Legal or Folio Size paper, press the release button (1) in the bottom of the paper tray and then pull out the back of the paper tray.

12. Turn the stack of paper over. Put the paper back into the tray with the side to be printed on face down. Make sure the paper is below the maximum paper mark (▼▼▼).

note icon Overfilling the paper tray will cause paper jams.

13. Slowly push the paper tray completely into the machine.

- If the machine automatically resumes printing after reinstalling the paper tray, the issue has been resolved.

- If the machine doesn't automatically resume printing after reinstalling the paper tray, go to step 14.

14. Print the Printer Settings report:

a. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Print Reports, then press OK.

b. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Printer Settings, then press OK.

c. Press Go. The machine will print the Printer Settings report.

- If the report prints, the issue has been resolved.

- If the report doesn't print or the error reappears, go to step 15.

15. Check the paper tray gears:

a. Pull the paper tray completely out of the machine.

b. Remove all paper from the paper tray.

c. Find the white gears near the front left outside of the paper tray. Examine this area for any signs of missing, broken, or damaged gears. Carefully rotate the gears with your fingers and watch the plate in the middle of the paper tray to see if it lifts when the gears are turned.

- If the gears are present and intact, and the plate in the middle of the tray lifts when the gears are turned, go to step 16.

- If the gears are missing, broken, or damaged, or the plate in the middle of the tray doesn't lift when the gears are turned, the paper tray should be replaced to resolve this issue.

16. Clean the separator pad and paper pick-up rollers:

a. Press and hold Image to turn off the machine.

b. Tightly wring out a lint-free cloth soaked in lukewarm water, and then wipe the separator pad on the paper tray to remove dust.

c. Wipe the two pick-up rollers inside the machine to remove dust.

d. Reload the paper tray and put the paper firmly back in the machine.

e. Press Image to turn on the machine.

17. Test the machine by printing the Printer Settings report:

a. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Print Reports, then press OK.

b. Press ▲ or ▼ to display Printer Settings, then press OK.

c. Press Go. The machine will print the Printer Settings report.

- If the report prints, the issue has been resolved.

- If the report doesn't print or the error reappears, your machine will require service. Go to WARRANTY AND SERVICE OPTIONS.
